4th BUCHAREST BIENNALE 2010 Announces Curator

The 4th BUCHAREST BIENNALE
(Bucharest International Biennial for Contemporary Art)

Generated by Pavilion Magazine for Art & Culture
21 May - 20 June 2010

Under the curatorship of Felix Vogel (DE)

http://www.bucharestbiennale.org

Felix Vogel chose as theme of research for BB4 “Handlung. On Producing Possibilities”. BB4 takes the ambiguity of the German term “Handlung” – that is impossible to translate in all its levels of meaning, but it is somehow located between action, activity, agency and participation, but at the same time it could also mean story or even narration – as a starting point to examine diverse practices, which are proposing various forms of action. BB4 attempts to scrutinize and to exhaust the promise – that might just be a supposition – of art taking place in the public sphere and is it thus creating possibilities for (political) action or does the artwork itself has already inherited this moment of action? Therefore, the exhibition rather tries to articulate questions and suggests different prospects than to formulate answers. The biennial aims to intensify the interaction with the urban and political context in Bucharest by inviting participants, coming from different field
s like arts, architecture, politics, anthropology etc.

Felix Vogel (b. 1987) is curator and theoretician. His research and curatorial practice is focused on the relations between aesthetics and the social sphere. Consequently, he is interested in areas linked to activism, gender, historical avant-gardes as well as participative architecture.

Among his last curatorial projects are “100 Dutch Minutes” (Bucharest, Cluj, Iasi, Timisoara), “1234567″ (Karlsruhe) and “Holy Damn It!” (Karlsruhe). Felix Vogel lately edited two books for OneStarPress (Paris): “Renaud Auguste-Dormeuil: Fin de représentation” and “Lia Perjovschi: Sense”. Furthermore, he has been writing and working for different magazines, such as PAVILION, AFI and Displayer.
Felix Vogel is currently living and working in Karlsruhe and Konstanz, Germany.

With the appointment as curator of BB4, Felix Vogel will – probably – be the youngest curator of a biennial, ever.

The co-directors of BB4 are Răzvan Ion and Eugen Rădescu.

Go out - find a story – publish it:
The „4th International Video Journalism Awards” is calling for entries!

The Video Journalism Awards is looking for non-fiction videos from
single authors, the so called videojournalists (short VJs). A VJ is
responsible for the whole creative process starting from research and
shooting as well as covering the whole process of editing and
sometimes even the publication of the film.
A small camcorder and a laptop are the tools of the VJ, which is
comparable to the pen and paper a newspaper journalist uses.

The final deadline for entering films for the 4th International Video
Journalism Awards is the 15th of October 2008. The awards are produced
by vjawards.com , the host is ZDF German Television in Mainz.

The internet is converging all kinds of media, which is reflected by
this year’s theme “unlimited access”. The awards try to cover all
known fields of video journalism: films from TV-stations and
publishing companies and productions from an independent background
are awarded with a total of 12.000 € of prize money going to the
seperated categories “independent and online” and “TV production”.
Recent developements that influence the VJ-scene and future
perspectives are discussed in the supporting programme of the 4th

Ping Pong at Kunsthallen Brandts
Opposites and Interplay in the
Art of Huang Yong Ping
21 June - 21 September 2008
Kunsthallen Brandts
Brandts Torv 1
DK-5000 Odense C

http://www.brandts.dk/prb

China evokes strong feelings in the Western world right now. We do not understand the country’s culture and view of human life, just as they are unappreciative of Western values. The communication between East and West is precisely what is on the Chinese artist Huang Yong Ping’s agenda. In his art he points to the great differences between these two parts of the world, but also tries to unite East and West and make us communicate. The exhibition Ping Pong at Kunsthallen Brandts presents works by Huang Yong Ping. It is both a beautiful and very powerful exhibition centering on the world’s conflicts and its lack of understanding and dialogue.

The Vegetable and Animal Kingdoms
Five stuffed goats and a wolf are watching a halal slaughter of own their species on TV. A ceramic model of the Colosseum towers like a symbol of the fall of the Roman empire, while vegetation is taking over. An elephant lies dead by itself, a dog is running away with a shoe in its mouth, while a booth stands abandoned. The artist’s work tells of the exploitation and violations that are constantly taking place in both the East and the West. A characteristic feature of these works, nine in all, is their enormeous formats. The exhibition includes, for example, a twelve-meter-long minaret, the Colosseum measuring 7.5 meters in diameter, and the even larger installation of Leonardo da Vinci’s eight horses, measuring 10 meters in diameter.

Ping Pong between Opposites
In the course of the past ten years, Huang Yong Ping has distinguished himself internationally at the world’s largest biennials. He has also attracted attention in Japan, the US and China with his spectacular installations that play ping pong with cultural identities, East and West, religion and science, beauty and horror, power and oppression. But not without humour and irony. The many stuffed animals have their origin in ancient Chinese culture, but Ping uses them to tell stories with a view both to history and the contemporary world.

Art History in the Washing Machine
Huang Yong Ping was born in 1954 in Xiamen, China, and belongs to the first generation of Chinese contemporary artists. Since 1989, he has lived alternately in China and Paris. While he was studying Chinese art, he also studied the art of the West, and one of the artist’s major projects ever since has been to combine as well as point to differences between the culture and philosophy of East and West. In an early work, he washed two books on art history in separate washing machines. The result was two identical, grey masses of paper pulp which he compared to the concepts of art in the two parts of the world.

Opening
The exhibition opens on 26 June at 5 p.m. The german artist and curator Andreas Schmid will be giving the opening speech. Ping Pong will be open to the public from 27 June through 21 September, 2008. At the same time, Huang Yong Ping will be showing an exhibition of his work in London, and during the Olympics he will be exhibiting in Beijing.
