PHILADELPHIA EXHIBITIONS INITIATIVE AWARDS

The Philadelphia Exhibitions Initiative (PEI) announces grants totaling 1,166,231 USD—the largest amount awarded in the program’s 11-year history—to eight visual arts organizations and two teams of independent curators for outstanding visual arts exhibitions and exhibitions planning.

This year’s PEI exhibition grant recipients are:
• The Design Center at Philadelphia University
200,000 USD for Lace In Translation: An exhibition that will assemble a group of internationally-renowned artists and designers—Tord Boontje, Demakersvan, and Cal Lane— to explore the intersection of luxurious hand-craftsmanship with modern, mass production techniques through new, site-specific installations located throughout the Center’s grounds and galleries.
• Institute of Contemporary Art at the University of Pennsylvania
250,000 USD for Dirt on Delight: impulses that form clay: The artists will span the full spectrum of conventional delineations between fine arts, crafts, and outsider practices. In bringing them together around a unifying material and the concept of impulse, this exhibition poses an expansive and critical approach to issues surrounding craft itself.

• Megawords (Anthony Smyrski and Dan Murphy)
20,000 USD for Megawords Storefront: Independent curators Smyrski and Murphy will produce a month-long series of events in a storefront space in Center City, Philadelphia. This site will serve as Megawords’ focal point for permanent and rotating installations, guest speakers and artists, musical performances, workshops, and film screenings. Megawords will also release two special-edition, printed issues of their magazine Megawords.
• The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts
128,796 USD for Peter Saul: A Retrospective: Organized by Dan Cameron for the Orange County Museum of Art in Newport Beach. This show, the most comprehensive exhibition presented of Saul’s work, will feature over 60 paintings and drawings spanning the artist’s entire career (1960–present).
• Philadelphia Mural Arts Program
237,535 USD for LOVE LETTER: Will present a large-scale public art installation with Philadelphia-born artist Stephen Powers. Powers has conceived of this installation as a love story, written and painted in 30 parts, that will stretch along a line of rooftops running parallel to the elevated train line in West Philadelphia.
• Philadelphia Museum of Art
250,000 USD for James Castle: A Retrospective: This is the first comprehensive exhibition of the work of one of America’s primary self-taught artists. James Castle (1899-1977) spent his life making art as a deaf, non-speaking man in rural Idaho.

This year’s PEI planning grant recipients are:
• Arcadia University
25,000 USD for planning a project with Tacita Dean
• The Clay Studio
25,000 USD for planning to build a curatorial team and a series of exhibitions
• Rosenbach Museum & Library
24,900 USD for planning programming of newly-created exhibition spaces
• Screening (Nadia Hironaka and Matt Suib)
5,000 USD for planning a new project with filmmaker Pat O’Neill

PEI grants are awarded on a competitive basis and are selected by a distinguished panel of visual arts professionals: The 2007 panel included:
Jeremy Strick (Panel Chair), Director, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles
Rashida Bumbray, Assistant Curator, The Kitchen, New York City
Jason T. Busch, Curator of Decorative Arts, Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, PA
Siri Engberg, Curator, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, MN
Laura Hoptman, Kraus Family Senior Curator, New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York City
Bill Horrigan, Director, Media Arts, Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus, OH
Nato Thompson, Curator/Producer, Creative Time Inc., New York City

The Philadelphia Exhibitions Initiative is one of seven cultural initiatives at the Philadelphia Center for Arts and Heritage, funded by The Pew Charitable Trusts and administered by The University of the Arts.

TRENTINO - SOUTH TYROL, ITALY

http://www.manifesta7.it

Manifesta 7, the European Biennial of Contemporary Art is hosted by the Trentino – South Tyrol Region from July 19 to November 2. It takes place in Italy for the first time, stretching across an entire regional territory, encompassing venues in four cities along a course of 150 kilometers joining the north and south of Europe along the Brenner axis: Fortezza (Bressanone), ex Alumix in Bolzano, the Palazzo delle Poste in Trento, Manifattura Tabacchi, ex Peterlini and the train station in Rovereto.

The exhibitions of Manifesta 7 in Fortezza, Bolzano, Trento and Rovereto, including a number of special projects, host more than 230 artists, architects, writers and experts from around the world and the majority of the paintings, sculptures, videos, installations and sound works on show have been specially created for Manifesta 7.

In Rovereto, Adam Budak develops his exhibition Principle Hope in both the 20th Century industrial building of the ex Peterlini and the 19th Century Manifattura Tabacchi and manifestation, curated by the Office for Cognitive Urbanism, takes place at the train station of Rovereto.

Anselm Franke/Hila Peleg in Trento curate the exhibition THE SOUL (or, Much Trouble in the Transportation of Souls) at the Palazzo delle Poste, a functionalist building from the 1930s.

Raqs Media Collective, formed by Jeebesh Bagchi, Monica Narula & Shuddhabrata Sengupta, present their exhibition The Rest of Now in Bolzano at the ex Alumix, another industrial building from the early 20th Century; a series of events entitled Tabula Rasa, by Denis Isaia in conversation with Raqs Media Collective, is presented over the 111 opening days in Room 124 of the ex Alumix.

The entire curatorial team works together at the final exhibition venue, the Austrian fortress of Fortezza, with Scenarios, a project exploring the concept of the immaterial dimension.

Particular attention is dedicated to educational activities throughout the entire region, with a special didactic program linking all the various exhibitions. The didactic team invites people to approach contemporary art in a way that freely shows their own personality and imagination, to build a hospitable place where opinions can be recognized and re-valued. Guided tours in English, Italian and German are available during opening hours, as well as a range of special projects, education materials and activities for school classes.

Silvana Editoriale has published three catalogues for Manifesta 7: INDEX, a guide book dedicated to the four exhibitions and the participating artists (in Italian, German and English); COMPANION, a volume of critical and theoretical studies about the shows and artistic projects (in English); SCENARIOS, a monograph edition dedicated to the Fortezza project (in Italian, German, English).

Together with Manifesta 7, many Parallel Events take place throughout the two provinces: a selected program incorporating 48 events in South Tyrol and 50 in Trentino. This includes exhibitions, events, performances and concerts supported by many of the numerous institutions and associations that have made of this region into such a dynamic territory for contemporary art.

Since 1979 the Kuenstlerstaette Schloss Bleckede has been seeking to promote young artists who explore innovative positions in the field of contemporary fine art. Today artists, whose work addresses complex aesthetic, cultural or political issues, rarely find the necessary support to realize their ambitious projects. This is why the Kuenstlerstaette Schloss Bleckede wishes to offer these artists the opportunity to develop their work in the course of a residential scholarship of three or six months.

The Kuenstlerstaette Schloss Bleckede offers ideal working conditions. The historic remise of the castle of Bleckede has been restored and transformed into three studios, each of which provides an extensive work space and a comfortable living area. The castle is located in the nature reserve Elbufer Drawehn close to the river Elbe between Hamburg and Lueneburg. Moreover Hamburg and Berlin is within easy reach, both of which have a thriving cultural life. The scholarship includes a monthly grant of Euro 1.400,- , which is made available for up to three scholarship holders at any one time, by the state of Lower Saxony. Previous scholarship winners have included reknown artists like Ulla von Brandenburg, Shannon Bool, Geoffrey Hendricks, Peter Pommerer, Katharina Sieverding, Maki Tamura and Simon Wachsmuth. The residential scholarship will be selected by a jury.

“Zidovi na ulici / Walls in the Street” is a collaboration between Siemens Arts Program and Museum of Contemporary Art Belgrade. International artists were invited to revise one of the basic preconditions of production and representation: the wall. In social terms the wall is a barrier between the internal and the external, in terms of corporeal presence it is carrier between the unseen and the visual. The wall can cause comfort, when feeling safe within one’s own home, but it can also exclude, by forcibly segregating a person from a certain territory. Irrespectively if a wall is authoritative or permeable it is a phenomenon of wide range. The exhibit tried to take these various meanings into account. Besides an assembling of loaned artworks of indigenous as well as international origin a considerable number of contributions was commissioned. In order to prove the walls different aspects several literal and metaphorical artworks referring to the wall were installed either ind
oors in a White Cube situation or in public space. By using selected spots in the center of Belgrade these “artistic” walls are situated were they are effective as usual, as facade, monument, obstacle, impediment, border, and sign of authority, but also in terms of conceptual critical comment and aesthetic appreciation.
