Sonsbeek 2008: Grandeur
Unique tradition, legendary reputation

Arnhem, the Netherlands

http://www.sonsbeek2008.nl

Since 1949 Arnhem has built up a legendary reputation as one of the major international art events of Europe: the Sonsbeek sculpture exhibition. ‘Sonsbeek 2008: Grandeur’ is the 10th edition in a series that has featured well-known curators such as Saskia Bos, Valerie Smith and Jan Hoet. And, again, it stands for an original vision on developments in contemporary art. This Sonsbeek is pursuing in a new and innovative way the involvement of the public in art that seeks to be more than just art for the art world.

Artistic director Anna Tilroe has invited 28 outstanding artists from all continents to present their ideas about the pursuit of ‘Grandeur’. Specially for Sonsbeek 2008 they are creating a work of art that represents the striving for human greatness, based on a completely individual point of view.

The involvement of the public and the city acquires a unique form: before being installed in the beautiful, old surroundings of Sonsbeek Park, the works of art will be carried by the inhabitants of Arnhem through the old innercity in a solemn, but festive Procession on June 8.

In June 2008 de Appel presents:

Nancy Spero (US) “Spero Speaks”
Currently on show till June 22 2008

Nancy Spero (1926) ranks as one of the most important artists of her generation. To mark the release of the unique publication “Codex Spero. Nancy Spero Selected Writings and Interviews 1950 - 2008” - a ‘radical manifest’ or an ‘artistic testament’ with a selection of texts of the artist, personal statements, notes and interviews compiled by curator Roel Arkesteijn (NL) - de Appel is hosting a solo exhibition by this prominent American artist.

“The artist is a mysterious entertainer”
2 - 22 June 2008

Artists: Guy de Cointet (FR/US), Allen Ruppersberg (US), Benoit Marie (FR), Mario Garcia Torres (MX/US), Trisha Donnelly (US), Matt Mullican (US).

“The artist is a mysterious entertainer” takes as its starting point the permanent piece by Allen Ruppersberg located on the top floor of de Appel’s building. Ruppersberg’s “Library Floor” (1994) will play different roles in the exhibition, which takes it as its physical as much as conceptual frame. Departing from this imaginary library, the exhibition and performances curated by Vanessa Desclaux (FR/UK), intend to explore the multi-faceted role of the artist as author, narrator and fictional character, looking at various artistic practices that are drawn to the performative dimension of language and the invention of fictions.

“Immovably Centred”
2 - 22 June 2008

Artist Arnoud Holleman (NL) realises a performance- and videoproject in collaboration with mugmetdegoudentand about the bond between megalomania and envisioned failure as the motor for contemporary art practice. Based on an investigation into how Auguste Rodin relates to Rainer
Maria Rilke.
