Surfacing memories from tough stories, important facts of the world history infiltrated by personal experiences, stories that whether we want to repel or we insist of keeping them alive, are the subject matter of the exhibition “Genius Seculi”, which is going to be presented at the Contemporary Art Center of Thessaloniki. The exhibition consists of photographs and video installations by Deimantas Narkevicius and Despina Meimaroglou, which will be hosted until the 30th of April, at the CACT, Warehouse B1, Thessaloniki Port.

How does one coexist with the ‘ghosts of the past’ in contemporary post-Soviet Lithuania? Why are we afraid of and why do we banish the public monuments of the communist era? These are some of the questions that Deimantas Narkevicius stresses throughout his work. On the other hand, the contemporary history of Cambodia and Northern Ireland and the millions of civilians that were eradicated by the Khmer Rouge regime, as also the “troubles” in Derry, are concepts that emerge from the works of Despina Meimaroglou, having as a result the combination of her own artistic narrative through the experiences and testimonies of others. Or the “Spirit of the time”, which apparently is the meaning of the exhibition’s title.

The president of the State Museum of Contemporary Art, George B. Tsaras, is stating that, “through the exhibition, a meeting is achieved in terms of the select relation between two artists, whose starting points differ only ostensibly. The common denominator in the work of both artists is the artistic approach to a traumatic past through moving and static images, namely videos and photographs. Art has the power to turn us into communicants of global problems that directly or indirectly concern the lives of us all, and to raise political, social and ideological issues in a certain universal manner that respects the uniqueness of every artist, whereas at the same time it allows every observer to interpret the message of the work of art in his/her own way“.

The director of the C.A.C.T., Syrago Tsiara, -also the curator of the exhibition- is underlining that, “the remaining and surfacing memories are the constituent elements of this exhibition. The Genius Seculi tackles difficult stories. It deals with painful memory, the recognition of the self in a part of the past, both individual and collective, whether we wish to repress it or ‘masochistically’ insist on keeping
it alive.

The works of Deimantas Narkevicius deal with the first instance: How does one coexist with the ‘ghosts of the past’ in contemporary post-Soviet Lithuania? Can one uproot a part of his past simply by getting rid of its repulsive symbols? And what happens to those fond memories of our childhood years, our first loves, the friendships and happy moments that happen to coincide with that ‘time of terror?

The curator is also mentions about Despina Meimaroglou that “she reverses these roles. By keeping the critical observer’s gaze alert, she places herself in the position of others, touches on recent dramatic events that do not evidently concern her personal story and creates her own artistic narrative through the experiences and testimonies of others. Her works converse with the contemporary history of Cambodia and Northern Ireland. How can one overlook the fact that millions of civilians were eradicated by the Khmer Rouge regime, a regime that not only crushed its political opponents, but also the social fabric itself, thus destroying the very core of the family? Why are the citizens of Derry in Northern Ireland so obsessed – even today, 37 years after the tragic ending of their protest – with keeping alive the images of the dramatic events by depicting the protagonists-martyrs of the conflicts against the British repressive forces on huge murals?

After Spencer Tunick in 2007, the renowned composer and visual artist Ryoji Ikeda (Japan 1966) will create art projects for DREAM AMSTERDAM. Ikeda’s hypnotic work plays with human perception through installations, performances, live concerts, recordings and album releases. His work has been exhibited and presented worldwide, including Tate Modern / Queen Elizabeth Hall (London) and Centre Pompidou / Museum of Modern Art (Paris). He has won important prizes, including the Ars Electronica Golden Nica (2001). Ikeda’s commission for Dream Amsterdam Foundation presents his first large-scale artworks for public spaces and marks a new direction in his artistic career.

DREAM AMSTERDAM 2008 is realized in collaboration with UK arts production company Forma and takes place within the frame of the Holland Festival. The OPENING EVENT on June 6, is realized in collaboration with Paradiso. Forma represents Ryoji Ikeda worldwide to produce and tour his work.

The dream of Ryoji Ikeda
For DREAM AMSTERDAM 2008, Ikeda will use pure light as the material for his interventions in various secret locations across Amsterdam. Intensely bright light installations will appear mysteriously, connecting a constellation of points across the cityscape. The energy used for the light installations is generated from sustainable, recycled resources. The site-specific art projects can be viewed from June 6 until June 21, 2008 in the evening hours. A detailed map with the locations and a route can be found from June 6 at http://www.dreamamsterdam.nl

DREAM AMSTERDAM HIGHLIGHTS

OPENING EVENT Friday June 6
The DREAM AMSTERDAM 2008 - OPENING EVENT is on Friday, June 6 in Paradiso from 20:30 pm with a special live concert and performance by Ryoji Ikeda and an amazing line up of other international guest artists and dj’s. Tickets for the whole programme are on sale through Paradiso and Ticketservice from March 15.

SILENT NIGHT Saturday June 7
On June 7, the SILENT NIGHT event presents a unique opportunity to experience the city as never before: Amsterdam switches off her lights. The darkness maximizes the contrast with the bright light of Ikeda’s installations spread over the city. Ryoji Ikeda and Dream Amsterdam Foundation invite residents of Amsterdam and visitors to actively participate in the SILENT NIGHT event and help contribute to the realization of Ikeda’s Dream, promising to deliver an extraordinary transformation of the city of Amsterdam for one night only.

ONLY CONNECT brings together the works of five artists who investigate the metaphor of communication through sculptural interventions and site-specific installations. Larry Bamburg, Tom Kotik, Heather Rowe, Mafalda Santos, and Patrick Tuttofuoco explore a world where information is translated into fragile assemblages, hyper-connected environments and intricate sculptures of
low-tech materials.

The artists in ONLY CONNECT construct systems of communication and exchange that rely on basic materials, fragile geometries or simple, sometimes natural forms. In their modesty or immediate simplicity, the artworks offer an alternative against the hyper-technological landscapes in which we live and work, suggesting that complexity and multiplicity don’t only belong to the realm of digital technology but also to the much more private and provisional spaces of imagination.

Some of the works in the exhibition seem to visualize free associations and over-excited brain activities. Larry Bamburg’s installations, for example, resemble intricate galaxies or three-dimensional graphs made of wood, fans, broken objects and nylon strings. Tom Kotik works on a peculiar form of sound sculpture that tries to compete against background noises. His “architecture of silence” – as the artist calls it – describes a space in which to retreat and experience a momentary disjunction from the flow of information. Other works in the show resemble artificial compositions of global networks or flow charts, but they seem to insist on finding a personal dimension within the social space of information. Mafalda Santos’ complex diagrams and intricate systems engage with the fractal geometries of communication networks but they do so through the very personal gestures of the artist’s hand. Patrick Tuttofuoco looks at communication as a role game, in which borde
rs, hierarchies and distances can be easily reinvented. Heather Rowe is probably the most traditional sculptor in this group, but her work often transforms space by opening it up to imaginary travels and distant, mental geographies.

The exhibition hints at a secret relationship between the grammar of thoughts and the diagrams of international information exchange – a relationship that might be of love and hate, of similarity and contrast. ONLY CONNECT is a celebration of the ecstasy of communication: it evokes the uncertainty and confusion of today’s digital society and expresses the need to return to a more personal form
of exchange.

ONLY CONNECT is organized by Art in General and sponsored by Bloomberg.
