The Turner Prize 2007 has been awarded to Mark Wallinger, it was announced at Tate Liverpool yesterday. The 25,000 British Pounds prize was presented by Dennis Hopper.

Mark Wallinger was shortlisted for State Britain at Tate Britain, a direct representation of the banners and paraphernalia of Brian Haw’s protest in Parliament Square. The jury commended its immediacy, visceral intensity and historic importance. The work combines a bold political statement with art’s ability to articulate fundamental human truths.

The jury stressed the strength of the exhibition at Tate Liverpool and wished to record their admiration for the outstanding presentations produced by all four artists.

The winner was chosen by a jury whose members are: Michael Bracewell, writer and critic; Fiona Bradley, Director, Fruitmarket Gallery; Edinburgh; Thelma Golden, Director & Chief Curator, Studio Museum, Harlem; Miranda Sawyer, freelance broadcaster and writer and Christoph Grunenberg, Director of Tate Liverpool and Chairman of the Jury.

The Turner Prize is being held at Tate Liverpool this year as a curtain-raiser for Liverpool’s year as European Capital of Culture in 2008. The exhibition, featuring work from the four shortlisted artists Zarina Bhimji, Nathan Coley, Mike Nelson and Mark Wallinger, will continue until 13 January at Tate Liverpool. The prize will return to Tate Britain in 2008.

LA BIENNALE DE MONTRÉAL 2009 APPOINTS SCOTT BURNHAM AS CREATIVE DIRECTOR, ANNOUNCES THEME: “OPEN CULTURE”

Creative Director:
SCOTT BURNHAM
MONTRÉAL CANADA
May 2009

http://www.ciac.ca

Claude Gosselin, Executive and Artistic Director of the Centre international d’art contemporain de Montréal (CIAC), is delighted to announce the appointment of Scott Burnham (Montréal/London) as Creative Director of La Biennale de Montréal 2009. The Biennale will take place throughout Montréal during May 2009 as a redefinition of a biennial, working within Burnham’s theme for 2009: “Open Culture”. As Scott Burnham explains:

“We are in the midst of a paradigm shift in society’s relationship with art and culture. The line between audience and artist is blurring to the point of invisibility, and in its place is a democratisation of the creative process and the demystification of the artist as shaman. In the same way that the open source movement has driven technological innovation, the philosophies and processes behind open, remix and mashup culture, Creative Commons licensing and collaborative creativity is driving cultural innovation — and ultimately redefining creativity itself. The 2009 Biennale de Montréal will be the international focal point for the exploration of this shift in culture.”

Working across visual art, design, architecture, theatre and music, La Biennale de Montréal 2009 will be a catalyst for new open culture projects and the exhibition and exploration of some of the most innovative projects exploring open creativity.

About Scott Burnham

Scott Burnham’s work exploring creative catalysts, urban culture and open innovation has appeared in numerous cities throughout Europe, North America and China. He is the curator of Urban Play, a project he created and is developing with Droog Design, Amsterdam. He is formerly Creative Director for the Urbis Centre for Urban Culture in Manchester, UK, where he directed “Ill Communication”, one of Europe’s largest overviews of street art; ‘SuperCity’, a multi-disciplinary collaboration with architect Will Alsop to re-think the future of the urban environment, “At Home”, with designer Peter Saville, “The China Show” exploring contemporary Chinese creativity, and Urban Oasis with The Office for Subversive Architecture. He has also created and directed projects for London’s National Theatre, The Royal Society for British Sculpture, the cities of Barcelona and Prague, and Jude Kelly’s METAL organisation
in London.

A frequent lecturer and writer on creative catalysts and cultural innovation, recent keynote lectures have been delivered to organisations in the UK, Portugal, Austria, Italy, United States, Canada, and the Netherlands. His work and commentary has been featured on BBC television, The Today Programme, BBC Radio 4, BBC World Service, Sky News, Spain TV1, Design Week, Grafik, The Guardian, Icon magazine, and The BBC Culture Show. He is a contributing author to the book “Visualising the City” (Routledge 2007), numerous periodicals, and maintains a series of international projects, consultations, and writing and lecturing appearances. Art Basel Miami Beach 2007

James Cohan Gallery is pleased to announce our participation in Art Basel Miami Beach 2007, opening on Wednesday, December 5th and running December 6th - 9th, 2007. We hope you will be able to visit us in Hall A, Booth B18

This year’s booth will feature an ambitious sculptural installation, including dynamic works by Ingrid Calame, Trenton Doyle Hancock, Yun-Fei Ji, Beatriz Milhazes, Nam June Paik, Roxy Paine, Alan Saret, Hiraki Sawa, Yinka Shonibare MBE, Erick Swenson, Alison Elizabeth Taylor, Bill Viola and Xu Zhen.

Trenton Doyle Hancock, recipient of the 2007 Joyce Alexander Wein Award from the Studio Museum Harlem, builds on the drama of his epic Vegan-Mound narrative with Vegan Arm, a nine-foot long skeletal limb shooting into the booth suspending a metal bucket of liquefied “Mound Meat.” This work was originally created for Hancock’s traveling exhibition, The Wayward Thinker, originating at the Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh, Scotland in 2006.

We are very excited to present a recent work by Chinese conceptual artist Xu Zhen, who will have his first New York solo exhibition at James Cohan Gallery in February 2008. Zhen’s aluminum coin, Never Falls, spanning one meter in diameter, is etched with a topographical world map and spins continuously on its axis at rapid speed, transforming from a flat coin to a voluminous sphere. While manifesting the adage that “Money Makes the World Go Round,” Zhen also suggests that the circulation of global currency is a game of chance.

We will also debut a stunning new sculpture series of trees by Yinka Shonibare, MBE, inspired by the theme of the four seasons and featuring leaves made from his signature “African” batik fabric.

Other works on view will include Bill Viola’s Ablutions, Erick Swenson’s gravity-defying Untitled and a new work by Alison Elizabeth Taylor. Of particular note will be several works from Alan Saret’s “Gang Drawings,” the series currently on view in his solo Drawing Center New York exhibition, in addition to the wire floor sculpture At the Nickel Arc Hill and the legendary Nam June Paik’s robot sculpture, Big Shoulder.
