Jitka Hanzlova, Winner of the 2007 BMW — Paris Photo Prize for
contemporary photography

The Czech artist Jitka Hanzlova was named winner of the 2007 BMW- Paris Photo Prize for contemporary photography at a gala awards ceremony on the 15th of November at Paris Photo, receiving the 12 000 euros (USD 15, 000) Prize.

Born in 1958 in Nachod, the Czech artist Jitka Hanzlova represented by the Kicken Gallery from Berlin becomes the fourth winner of this major international award, after French artist Mathieu Bernard-Reymond in 2006, American artist Anthony Goicolea in 2005 and the Switzerland’s Jules Spinatsch
in 2004.

Launched three years ago to support and promote contemporary artists working in the field of photography, the BMW — Paris Photo Prize is open to living art photographers represented by galleries participating in Paris Photo. The theme for 2007 was “Water, the Origin of Life” in connection with the new BMW advertising campaign.

Sixteen out the 50 artists whose work was submitted by participating galleries were short-listed by a jury of international experts presided by Nicolas Wertans, Chairman of BMW France. The jury then worked to select the winning artist. The short-listed works are exhibited during Paris Photo, enabling visitors to enjoy and appreciate some of the finest examples of contemporary art photography.

Jitka Hanzlova is an internationally recognised (portrait) photographer and her work has earned considerable acclaim, including the 1993 Otto Steinert Award. Her work is featured in internationally renowned collections and has been shown in important group exhibitions, most recently at the Barbican Centre in London, at the Akademie der Künste in Berlin and at the Ludwig Museum in Cologne.

Hanzlova photographs her subjects exclusively in colour and in the vertical format - in portrait format, to be precise. She seizes the moment, and takes it out of time: this is what gives Jitka Hanzlova’s work
its immediacy.

The winning work “Untitled (Hungry Fishes)”, 2004 is part of the series “The Cotton Rose” Hanzlova made in Japan, where she photographed the ‘otherness’ of a strange world, so different from the West, in small, vertical images. The work is devoid of any predictable exoticism, and yet the images are powerful metaphors owing to the intensity of the vision and the tight framing of the subject. In “Untitled (Hungry Fishes)” the preciousness of water and its power as a giver of life is suggested in the colourful movement of the fish at the surface of the muddy liquid.

Wynwood

An urbane newcomer has joined the constellation of art fairs illuminating Miami from
December 5 to 9, 2007.

Art Miami–second in size only to Art Basel Miami Beach–debuts in the Wynwood Art District, as an international stage bringing a bevy of fresh faces to the city, including a select group of art dealers who are leading, long-time experts in their areas of specialization.

The new Art Miami has sprung from the roots of a fair of the same name, which anchored the January art calendar here for nearly two decades. 99 galleries will participate. From New York City alone come Alexander Gray Associates, Anna Kustera, Barry Friedman Ltd, Betty Cuningham Gallery, Danese, Laurence Miller Gallery, Leslie Tonkonow Artworks + Projects, Senior & Shopmaker Gallery, and Yossi Milo Gallery, among others.

Gallery Paule Anglim, Hackett-Freedman Gallery, and Haines Gallery will travel from San Francisco and Rosamund Felsen Gallery and Rose Gallery from Los Angeles. Wetterling Gallery from Stockholm and Xin Dong Cheng Gallery from Beijing are two of a strong contingent of European and Asian participants, and the work of important Latin artists will be featured by galleries based in Mexico and Venezuela as well as the U.S.

Art Miami promises to be a user-friendly show, geared to seasoned art fair experts as well as to those who may be new to serious collecting. Lounge spaces throughout the fair are designed by Miami’s newest showroom, Open Doors, to encourage conversation and pause, while a quality on-site dining experience will be offered at Palate by Touch Catering, created exclusively for Art Miami.

Art Advisor Program
The Art Miami Advisor Program will feature a select group of top art consultants, experts in a range of disciplines, who will offer their services to VIP guests at the fair. The program is coordinated by Stacey Gershon, an independent Art Advisor who for 25 years was Curator of the JP Morgan Chase Art Collection and the former president of the International Association of Professional art Advisors.

Travel + Lodging
Plenty of hotel rooms are available to Miami visitors. Check our website at http://www.art-miami.com for details in the Visitor Info tab.

Worldwide private jet charter provider Prive Jets, a sponsor of Art Miami, is available to arrange on demand charter services for VIP guests, as well as hourly cards and flexible programs.

Art Miami is the only art fair in Miami to provide concierge service for its visitors. The firm Belavie will help visitors find local transportation, choose restaurants, make reservations for dining and nightlife activities, book meeting spaces, find spas and salons, arrange parties in gallery booths and manage printing jobs.

The Venue
The 100,000 sq. ft. fair will occupy a spectacular tented structure stationed at the center of the week’s activity: just blocks from the major satellite fairs, the Rubell Family Collection, MOCA at Goldman Warehouse, The Margulies Collection at the Warehouse, CIFO (Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation), galleries, and the Miami Design District.

Shuttles
Shuttles will be available throughout the fair from Art Miami to the Miami Beach Convention Center.
Sponsors of Art Miami include Citibank, ArtNexus, Open Doors, Prive Jets and Managed Artwork.
The fair is owned and operated by Summit Business Media.

NEW WORKS: 07.3
ON VIEW THROUGH JANUARY 6, 2008

Artpace San Antonio is pleased to announce New Works: 07.3 selected by guest curator Alex Farquharson, Director, Centre for Contemporary Art, Nottingham, England, presenting new projects by Matthew Buckingham (New York, New York), Chris Evans (London, England and Berlin, Germany), and Alex Rubio (San Antonio, Texas).

At Artpace, Matthew Buckingham presents Half Remembered, bringing together a group of video, audio, and performance works that examine popular interest in archiving, handwriting, and the nature of public space. The silent black-and-white video Within the Sound of Your Voice shows dozens of semi-anonymous individuals as they handwrite the title phrase of the work, and Infinite Tuning, a four-channel audio loop recording, features the sounds of an orchestra warming up, extending and repeating the sounds to heighten a sense of anticipation. All the works in the exhibition examine various modes of communication and historical documentation, investigating how these practices enable social tuning
and synchronization.

Chris Evans’ Artpace project, What’s the point of revolution without copulation, copulation, copulation? hinges on a debate between individual freedom and collective responsibility, embodied respectively by the famous hedonist Marquis de Sade and the radical journalist and revolutionary Jean-Paul Marat. The installation includes You are the Sovereign, a maquette of a champagne decanter honoring Marat proposed by the artist to the vintner Laurent Perrier, accompanied by the letter of proposal and a photograph of the maquette being presented to a representative of a pharmaceutical company that develops remedies for dermatologic ailments similar to that suffered by Marat. Such lateral connections and counterpoints form the basis of the exhibition, which also features an airbrush painting on glass proposed for installation in a courthouse, and a pitch for a science fiction, psychological horror film.

At the heart of Alex Rubio’s Artpace exhibition, El Carreton (The Cart), is a fantastical, larger-than-life, metal grocery cart. Installed on a graffiti-covered platform, the sculpture is framed by a stylized fence and building painted in vibrant shades of red, yellow, and orange. Wall signatures, neon accents, a video montage, and an audio piece add to the rich sensory experience of the installation. Informed by his interest in collaboration, Rubio’s project brought together San Antonio artists Cathy Cunningham, Rudy Galindo, Adriana Garcia, Luis Chispas Guerrero, Phil Luna, Manuel Soliz, and David “Shek” Vega to create a sculptural installation that projects an intimate, yet panoramic sense of San Antonio’s vibrant Latino neighborhoods and communities.
