H + F CURATORIAL GRANT
1st edition 2007/2008

FRAC Nord — Pas de Calais (F), de Appel Contemporary Art Centre(NL),
H + F Collection & Tomorrow Books Studio/Académie Jan van Eyck (NL)

The “H+F Curatorial Grant” is an ambitious and original initiative which will allow the FRAC Nord–Pas de Calais (Dunkirk/France) in close partnership with the de Appel art centre (Amsterdam/The Netherlands), the private collector Han Nefkens (H+F Collection) and Tomorrow Books Studio/Jan van Eyck Academy (Maastricht/The Netherlands), to give different young international curators the opportunity to make exhibition projects based on the Frac collection.

This grant offers students (selected on projects) from the “curatorial” training programme created in 1994 by de Appel, a professional infrastructure and environment with free access to a research and documentation centre as well as to one of the best French collections of contemporary art. The FRAC acts as the first intermediary for these future professionals of contemporary art by helping them to develop and implement their projects.

Annette Schemmel, the young German curator, was selected for this first edition for her project “de-collecting” by a panel composed of Han Nefkens (H+F Collection), Ann Demeester (Director of de Appel) and Hilde Teerlinck (Director of the FRAC Nord-Pas de Calais). She will receive a grant for 18 months that will help finance her living and travelling expenses…

This project has been made possible thanks to the generous support of the patron Han Nefkens (journalist, writer and art collector), enabling the FRAC to reinforce the development of a strong and active policy of patronage around its activity.

“The pictures that I have chosen for this exhibition are ones that, it seems to me, come direct from the heart, down the arm. And I like that.”
David Hockney

This stunning book accompanies Tate Britain’s BP exhibition Hockney on Turner Watercolours, the largest survey of Turner watercolour masterpieces Tate has ever mounted.

In an exclusive interview with the lead curator of the exhibition, David Blaney Brown, David Hockney comments on his predecessor’s life and art, presenting his own choice of Turner’s remarkable colour studies and ‘beginnings’ — the works in which Turner explored the colour harmonies, compositions and patterns of light and shade for his finished watercolours.

The influence of Turner on Hockney’s recent return to painting the English landscape is also discussed in this insightful and revealing book.
