William Kentridge Prints
Edinburgh Printmakers 21 July to 8 September 2007
The 5th Edinburgh Arts Festival was launched on 26 July with over 30 exhibitions of artists from all over the world, including the first exhibition of works by William Kentridge’s work in the UK for nearly a decade..
“This celebrated South African polymathic artist startlingly combines the mediums of opera, theatre, mime, sculpture, printmaking and drawing in his work”, to quote from the essay for the catalogue by Kate McCrickard.
The connectivity of drawing to film, and his many collaborations explain why at any one time his work can be seen in museums and galleries in various parts of the world.
The exhibition consists mostly of etchings with drypoint, the artist’s favoured mark of drawing directly into copper plates, similar to the freedom of the charcoal lines of his drawings. Most of the sixty works on display focus on the artist’s work in series including Ubu Tells The Truth, Summer Grafitti, Zeno Writing, and Thinking Aloud . Also included are a series relating to Kentridge’s production of Mozart’s Magic Flute opera which has been performed in various cities around the world over the last few years, and will shortly be performed in Cape Town and Johannesburg.
Kentridge lives with his family in Johannesburg and has had numerous exhibitions around the world with many prestigious awards as well as honorary doctorates. He is the first holder of the Max Beckmann Foundation Professorship in Frankfurt which is currently concluding with an exhibition project inspired by the Dΰrer prints in the Städel Museum’s Department of Prints and Drawings
An exhibition of more than one hundred and eighty of Kentridge’s editioned works is currently travelling in the USA.
This exhibition also celebrates the 40th anniversary of Edinburgh Printmakers and was arranged in association with David Krut who has collaborated with the artist on editioned projects since 1992. The first editions were originated with master-printer Jack Shirreff at 107 Workshop, Wiltshire, and the most recent were created at David Krut Print Workshop (DKW), Johannesburg with printer Jillian Ross. The exhibition includes works from these and other print workshops at which the artist has created works.
