Opening: 16th March 2007, 7-9 pm

Anne-Mie van Kerckhoven will present her work at two different venues in Berlin at the same time: in the daadgalerie and at her gallery, Barbara Thumm. In the daadgalerie there will be mostly sketches and other works on paper such as collages that were created in her time as a participant in the Berlin Artists-in-Residence programme. This time in Berlin was, however, a time of re-orientation, manifesting itself in unusual pictorial compositions and an experimental approach to materials. The subject material of these works deals with the presentation of the human figure and its attitude towards the world as perceived by the artist. The results of these works show stylistic elements reminiscent of surrealism handed down by the Belgian school, at the same time they point to works from music, punk music, a scene in which Anne-Mie van Kerckhoven played an active role in Antwerp. It was within this framework that she shot her early films, which will now be shown for the first time
in co-operation with Arsenal cinema.

On March 26th, 28th and 31st, screenings at Arsenal cinema, for further information: http://www.fdk-berlin.de/arsenal

The Age of Discrepancies: Art and Visual Culture in Mexico 19681997 is the first exhibition to offer a critical assessment of the artistic experimentation that took place in Mexico during the last three decades of the twentieth century. The exhibition carefully analyzes the origins and emergence of techniques, strategies, and modes of operation at a particularly significant moment of Mexican history, beginning with the 1968 Student Movement, until the Zapatista upraising in the State of Chiapas. The show includes work by a wide range of artists, including Francis Alÿs, Vicente Rojo, Jimmie Durham, Helen Escobedo, Julio Galán, Felipe Ehrenberg, José Bedia, Guillermo Gómez-Peña, Francisco Toledo, Carlos Amorales, Melanie Smith, and Alejandro jodorowsky, among many others.

The Age of Discrepancies attempts to construct a narrative around the way different cultural trends contributed to the production of art. The show is built layer upon layer, providing an overview of diverse artistic genres, from painting and photography to poster design, installation, performance, experimental theater, super-8 cinema, video, music, poetry and popular culture, reconstructing specific moments of artistic experimentation, representative of diverse intellectual and visual tendencies which, as well as occurring simultaneously, competed as alternative models of cultural practice. The Age of Discrepancies offers a hypothetical genealogy for contemporary Mexican art (which is increasingly valued on a worldwide level), providing a context for social, political and technical developments.

A 484-page book, with scholarly essays by the curators and researchers for this project and 600 full-color illustrations, has been published by the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México in conjunction with Editorial Turner, to accompany the exhibition.

SCAPE Biennial

SCAPE 2008 BIENNIAL OF ART IN PUBLIC SPACE

SCAPE Biennial of Art in Public Space Seeks Curators for 2008

The SCAPE Biennial of Art in Public Space is New Zealands only international contemporary biennial dedicated to public art. 2008 is the fifth SCAPE Biennial for Christchurch and the 10 year anniversary of the Art & Industry Biennial Trust, who present the SCAPE Biennials.

The Art & Industry Biennial Trust (Art & Industry) is seeking your Expression of Interest (EOI) to be considered as one of two key curators for this important New Zealand biennial taking place between September - November 2008 in Christchurch.

SCAPE is one of the largest producers of new contemporary art in Australasia; engaging local, national and international audiences with new artworks by leading New Zealand and international artists in public space through partnerships with industry.

SCAPE also has a significant partnership with the Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu. An indoor exhibition, hub and public programme will be supported by the Gallery.

This exciting opportunity is for one New Zealand and one international curator. Once formed, the curatorial partnership will be responsible for reflecting Art & Industrys Strategic Plan, relationships with stakeholders and partners as well as matches to industry resources. The curators will also be required to build on the existing profile of the event locally, nationally and internationally while delivering a distinctive programme which challenges the parameters of the publics relationship with art.

Both partnered (national/international) and individual applications are welcome. Art & Industry is happy to broker relationships between interested curators.

For further details and/or to receive an application pack please contact Art & Industry: scapebiennial@xtra.co.nz. Final submission date for all applications is Friday 27 April 2007.

The Art & Industry Biennial Trust is supported by Creative New Zealand, the Arts Council of New Zealand and the Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu.
