Tram is coordinating ‘Hospitalities’, the first shared project by the network’s 25 member spaces. Hospitality is the unifying theme of this event and reflects our commitment to artists, their work and all audiences. Exhibition spaces – in cities, on their outskirts or in the country – are places where welcoming the public is a daily reality and where art is tied to hospitality. Our aim is to highlight the extraordinary amount of artistic activity going on and to create local and international connections showing that we are all involved with what artists have to offer.

Within the synergies operative at regional, national and international level, the different structures appropriate the theme according to their identity, their missions and their prospects, and respond in a variety of ways: residencies for artists or curators, exchanges with other spaces in Europe, “cartes blanches” for visiting curators etc. As part of the network rationale, major international institutions are being included in the project, among them the Centre Pompidou and the the Fondation d’entreprise Ricard.

The programme: some 20 exhibitions, about a hundred artists, a series of meetings and performances that will contribute to 10 days of ‘hospitalities’. The whole of the Ile-de-France region will share this contemporary art experience. The public – Hospitalities’ main guest – will be invited to move between projects from Paris to the outskirts and vice versa, thanks to 10 ‘taxi tram’ buses provided for the event.

Tram is a network of 25 structures engaged in the production and exhibition of contemporary art in Ile-de-France. Art centres, museums, art schools, artists’ collectives, foundations and the Regional Art Collection (Frac) all carry out activities which complement creation, exhibition, collecting, teaching, outreach, publishing, etc.

PULSE New York will run concurrently with The Armory Show from February 22 through 25, 2007, taking place at the 69th Regiment Armory Building located at East 26th Street and Lexington Avenue. In its second year, PULSE New York will feature high-quality works from 63 established and emerging galleries from 15 countries, including additions from Israel, China and Korea. Thirteen of the exhibiting galleries were chosen through an open application and selection process by the PULSE committee members to exhibit in the “IMPULSE” section.

PULSE New York returns after the record-breaking sales and near-double attendance that PULSE Miami had in December 2006, which drew close to 12,000 attendees, including major collectors and art patrons. The fair was recognized for its increased diversity, ambitious installations and manageable size. Artinfo.com praised PULSE’s second appearance in Miami, stating, “The auspicious debut of PULSE Miami last year quickly pushed it into the top tier of must-see fairs, and its second outing only added to its favored status.” The Wall Street Journal focused on the quality of works at PULSE compared to other fairs, “You had only to go to the independent PULSE art fair, near the Design District, to get a shock of pleasure at wonderful work by established but non-celebrity artists”. In addition, The Baer Faxt, the art-world newsletter, reported that PULSE Miami had been voted by its readers as having tied with Art Basel Miami Beach as the best fair for 2006, an extraordinary accomp
lishment for a still relatively new endeavor in the art market growing landscape.

Francis Alÿs – A STORY OF DECEPTION
A Story of Deception – both the title of the work shown at Portikus (September/October 2006) and of the recently published book – is not only a story about illusions, but simultaneously a story about altered perceptions of a work that was realised in Argentina over the course of three years and shown in Frankfurt for the first time outside of the country where it was originally realised. After the film, A Story of Deception, was presented at the Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires (Malba), the opportunity presented itself to take this line of thought and to transfer it to a different context. The image that Alÿs founded in Patagonia – the ‘fuite en avant’, or the ambition to tackle a situation head on – that ends in the manifestation of a Fata Morgana, evolves from a story from Patagonia into a metaphor for the general notion of progression.
