October 21 to December 9, 2006

Opening: Saturday October 21, 3 to 5pm

The exhibition title Home Theatre plays on the conventional expectation that audio/video ‘home theatre’ is what animates today’s residences. But the works in this show reveal that our homes are already fascinating and complex; our homes are the stage, we are the players. While the work in Home Theatre is as fresh as the way we live today, the internal dynamic of domestic spaces has been a key part of art-making for hundreds of years - certainly going back to Vermeer in the 1660s.

HOME THEATRE is a survey exhibition examining the ‘idea of the domestic’ with work by Karin Bubas, Arni Haraldsson, Carol Sawyer (Vancouver), Lynda Gammon (Victoria) and Oliver Michaels (New York).

In her Ivy House images, Karin Bubas captures the elegiac mood of a long-occupied London home; Lynda Gammon shows drastically modified photographs of her former residence and studio in Rotterdam; Arni Haraldsson documents the density and visual complexity of the Binning House in West Vancouver; Oliver Michaels’ video/film TRAIN ‘creates’ a non-existent complex of domestic spaces via the illusion of a train ride through an assortment of distinct rooms separated by tunnels; Carol Sawyer’s photographs in her FLUX series show empty Strathcona homes and the traces left by past inhabitants at the moment just prior to renovations.

SFU Gallery Director Bill Jeffries will give short talks on the works in Home Theatre at the SFU Gallery in Burnaby on: Tuesday Oct 24 at 12:05pm; Thursday October 26 at 12:35pm; Wednesday November 1 at 12:05pm; and Friday November 3 at 1:05pm. Group or class tours may be booked in advance.
