Galerie SAW Gallery | Call for submissions | Leaving Deep Water, Ottawa

October 21st, 2007

Galerie SAW Gallery

Call for submissions

Exhibition: Leaving Deep Water

Curator: Minh Nguyen

Deadline: November 30, 2007

In”The Site of Memory,”an essay written by the African American writer
Toni Morrison, water, as “flooding,” is linked to the flow of cultural
memory contained by images or pictures. Viscerally, water is also
considered a purifier in most religions around the world, and is often
believed to have spiritual powers. Colourless, tasteless and
odourless, this essential substance of all forms of life is both an
economic commodity and the source of many sociopolitical contentions
throughout historical ages. To explore the expansive metaphorical
nature of water, Galerie SAW Gallery invites submissions from artists
in Canada and the US, emerging or established, and from culturally
diverse communities.

The submitted works must demonstrate a strong intention in exploring
the nature of water as a metaphorical element, a medium, a material, a
site, or combination thereof. Works in drawing, painting, sculpture,
printmaking, photography, mixed media, installation, media art and
Internet-based art will be considered. Proposals from performance
artists are also welcome. The exhibition is scheduled to take place in
the spring of 2008. All selected artists will receive an exhibition
fee.

Please include: up to 10 images of your work (digital files, slides or
prints), an image list, a CV (max. 3 pages), an artist statement (max.
300 words) and a self-addressed stamped envelope (if applicable).
Please do not send original artwork. Submissions can be sent through
regular mail or electronically. For digital images, please submit jpg
files only, at a resolution of 72 dpi and 500 KB maximum. Title each
file (image) with a number, your initials, the year and title of your
work (for example: 01MN2007LeavingWater.jpg)

Please send submissions to:

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS ‘emotional baggage’

March 18th, 2007

WHAT: I need YOUR help! I am looking for a list of your ‘emotional
baggage’ that you carry with you…it can be from your past, past
relationships, current relationships, friends, family - whatever as
long as you don’t name names and keep it anonymous.

WHY: I am creating an artwork that will be in a work of art in the
exhibition NO FIXED ADDRESS….part of suitcase art galleries, a DDJV
Art Project (collaboration of Hamilton Artists Jessica Vellenga and
Douglas Drake).

ABOUT: MY list of emotional baggage along with yours will be used to
decorate the suitcase. I need the list or issues to be completely
anonymous, that way no one gets hurt and you get to vent guilt free.
Basically this suitcase is literally a way to get rid of your ‘excess
baggage’ metaphorically and allow others to empathize with general
issues that may affect them too, allowing the viewer some sense of
consolation that they are not alone with their problems.

For more information or to email a list please contact Jessica

dune-edged beaches, barrier sand spits, forested till uplands,
barachois ponds and salt marshes. The Cavendish site located on the
north shore of Prince Edward Island offers many historical and
cultural resources including Green Gables. Facilities available in
the park for visitors include: campgrounds, picnic areas, hiking
trails, supervised swimming areas, and a golf course. During the
summer a variety of interpretive events are offered in different
locations in the park, including guided beach walks, campfire
programs, and outdoor theatre programs. Cycling is a popular activity
on the Homestead Trail in Cavendish. The National Park is also an
excellent site for bird-watching; the park participates in the
recovery program for the endangered piping plover. Parks Canada’s
main priority is to protect the ecological integrity of the park
through ecosystem management. Each year a variety of research projects
are carried out in the park, inventories are conducted and regular
